Pura vida: Beginning Spanish is an input-rich, culture-based Beginning Spanish program. The Costa Rican expression Pura vida, which means pure life or true to life, reflects the programs commitment to true-to-life portrayals of Latin American and Spanish cultures. This program supports the five goals of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning -- communication, culture, connections, comparisons, and communities. The program departs from prevalent portrayals of el mundo hispano or pan-latinidad to illustrate the differences among the twenty-one Spanish-speaking countries. Culture is presented through four lenses: how we see ourselves, how we see other cultures, how they see themselves and how they see us. Pura vida: Beginning Spanish presents concepts inductively, so that activities drive the grammar.
